The refurbishment of the Roche office building in Amadora sought to optimise occupancy, modernise infrastructure in line with sustainability guidelines, and create attractive, flexible workspaces that encourage interaction. The interior distribution of the U-shaped portion of the plan was significantly reconfigured, integrating the DIA and Pharma divisions instead of segregating them. Some areas required extensive technical upgrades, such as AC and acoustic improvements, while others focused on finishes and lighting updates. The activation of the inner courtyard provides employees with a landscaped and furnished outdoor area to relax, socialise, and work.
The design embraced an activity-based working strategy, incorporating a large diversity of space types. Enclosed rooms for concentration and confidentiality are clustered into defined “boxes”, with corners carved out to create open collaboration zones. Open work areas near the façades receive plenty of natural light and enjoy views of the site’s gardens. Break and dining spaces strategically located to promote visual connections, serve as decompression zones and were conceived with a hospitality feel.
Conceptually, the project drew inspiration from Portuguese identity, incorporating textures, geometries and local materials such as cork and tiles. Curved cork “tiles” specially designed for the project, create a distinctive texture alongside wood panelling to reinforce the enclosed “boxes” as distinctive features of the design. The ceiling and floor provide a backdrop that emphasises these volumes. Coloured acoustic panels and curtains in the enclosed rooms contrast with the overall neutral color palette, while abundant natural plants promote wellbeing and a healthy environment.
A large proportion of the existing furniture was reused. New additions include pieces from the PLEC collection especially designed for Roche, alongside furniture and lamps from Portuguese designers and manufacturers, which contribute to the strong identity of the space.
